We Do Love A Walled Town.....Dinan.

Today started as yesterday finished, wet, wet and more wet!

We had another go at getting to Mont St Michel, but the weather was just too bad.
We checked it out in the misty distance and bade it a fond farewell.
It would have been beautiful if the sun had been out!

We decided to head off to check out St Malo.  We plotted to go cross country and stay off the motorways.(We never go on the toll toads).

As you can see the weather was a bit dire ...

We arrived at St Malo and decided to check out the town first before parking up at the aire (which was a fair way out of town).

We don't mind bit of a crowd but there were just too many people about with huge queues to get in all the carparks.  It all just felt too .... big ... for us, not what we felt like today!

We had a swift change of plan and decided to head off inland a little bit to the town of Dinan.
As soon as we entered the town we thought 'ah, this is more our cup of tea' ...

The motorhome park is just 200 metres from the port part of the town.  It is free to park overnight but because we arrived at lunchtime it cost us 5 euros (£3.55 or $7.00 AUD) for the day and overnight parking.

It is great little Aire and as I type this drivel up at 20.00 there are only 6 motorhomes staying overnight ...

We took a walk to the port part first ...

Then walked up the steep hill to the walled part of the town ...

It was an absolutely fascinating place and just kept getting better and better at every turn...

Unlike St Malo there were very few tourists around ...

Not quite as impressive as the Bruges clock tower, but not too bad!

From one of the watch towers you get a lovely view down into the valley and the port.
Our van is at the bottom right of the pic ...

It is a stunning medieval, walled city.
We were so excited we had lunch and a beer in one of the squares!

We walked around part of the wall where you get some very nice views ...

We walked back down the hill to the port with Elaine stopping every few minutes to check out the herbs on display ...

We sat on the quayside eating a tasty little french tart when I spied a boat trying to tie up on the jetty.  There were no bollards, only rings, so I went over and gave them a hand ...

Sorted ...

I forgot to mention that the weather had also changed - the wind had dropped and the rain had stopped....woohoo!!

Another 16th century house on the other side of the bridge ...

All in all it is a terrific stopover and a great little Aire.
Here is tonight's location ...

And in a more technical form ...
